This scenic stretch of the Gitchi-Gami State Trail offers one of the most breathtaking rides or walks along Minnesota’s North Shore of Lake Superior. It follows the former Highway 61 route before the Silver Creek Tunnel was constructed.
The trail features 4,000 feet of continuous panoramic views of Lake Superior, interpretive panels, and resting benches. Start at the Silver Creek Cliff Wayside Rest Stop to enjoy a short walk to an overlook with spectacular views, a historic brass plaque, and a kiosk sharing the history of Trunk Highway 61.
Whether you’re biking, walking, or taking a family stroll, this relatively short segment offers a dramatic and accessible experience of the North Shore.

Please Note: Park only in designated areas and avoid leaving valuables in your vehicle. Be sure to acquire the required parking passes from the MN DNR when entering State Parks.
Accessibility
Silver Creek Cliff – 1 mile, round-trip
This segment follows the old Scenic Highway 61 and bypasses the Silver Creek Cliff tunnel. It offers 4,000 feet of continuous Lake Superior views.
The trail is paved and accessible for most users, but there is a gentle incline that could pose challenges for those with strollers or using mobility devices.
