A couple weeks ago, the Gitchi-Gami Trail Association supported 5th Graders from Lake Superior School District # 381 - Two Harbors, MN's William Kelley School in Silver Bay on an epic adventure! Their teacher works really hard at the beginning of the school year to tune up each student's bicycle. For those that don't have a bike to ride, Mr. Jacobs has a small fleet of loaner bikes we helped him purchase through a grant program several years back! On a beautiful September Tuesday, we reviewed bicycle safety, helmet safety, Minnesota laws about ebikes and edevices, we checked out the new Silver Bay Multi-Modal Trail Center, and then the students rode their bikes on the Gitchi-Gami State Trail, over several rivers, through lots of woods, with some superior views to Split Rock Lighthouse State Park! At Trail Center at the State Park, the students were welcomed by Minnesota State Parks and Trails staff who guided them through an interactive game featuring moose and deer, and then students worked on some fungi identification and tree decomposition stages. We got a class picture, and then the students were back on the trail to get back to school. It was an all-day adventure and students biked almost 20 miles round trip! This is such an important way to showcase shared spaces, stewardship, review bicycle safety, trail ettiquette, all while forging a great class culture while out on the trail!
