The Gitchi-Gami Trail Association (GGTA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the promotion, support, and success of the Gitchi-Gami State Trail.
While the Minnesota DNR builds and maintains the trail, GGTA works behind the scenes to keep the vision alive—partnering with communities, raising awareness, and advocating for continued development.
Formed in 1996, the association grew out of a grassroots effort by North Shore residents and trail enthusiasts who dreamed of a safe, scenic path along Lake Superior. Today, GGTA continues that mission by:
- Supporting construction and improvement projects through legislative processes, grants, and fundraising
- Promoting and providing information about the trail on its website and through community partners.
- Hosting community rides and events that bring people onto the trail and raise funds to support the trail.
- Partnering with state and local agencies, businesses, and organizations—including the Minnesota DNR, the Arrowhead Regional Development Commission (ARDC), and North Shore communities
- Providing a strong voice for trail users and supporters
The association is guided by a volunteer Board of Directors and supported by an Executive Director based at the Arrowhead Regional Development Commission (ARDC) in Duluth, Minnesota.
Together with our Business Sponsors & Partners, and our Individual and Family Members, we work to ensure that the Gitchi-Gami State Trail not only grows but also thrives as a treasured resource for generations to come.
