Trail Rules and Etiquette

To keep the Gitchi-Gami State Trail safe and enjoyable for everyone, please follow these rules:
  • Non-motorized use only – The trail is open to bicyclists, walkers, runners, in-line skaters, mobility devices, and e-bikes. Use of motorized vehicles, including cars, ATVs, dirt bikes, snowmobiles, and motorized scooters, is prohibited.

  • E-bikes Allowed – Class 1 & 2 e-bikes are permitted on the Gitchi-Gami State Trail while using pedal-assist only. Throttle-powered riding is not allowed.

  • Powered Mobility AidsUse of wheelchairs (manually-operated or power-driven, including electric scooters) and manually-powered mobility aids (such as walkers, crutches, canes, or braces) are permitted.

  • Segways, winter fat tire biking, dogsledding, and other use, refer to the MN State Trail Use Statute

  • Maintain a safe speed (20 mph max), and be in control of your bike or other device at all times. Follow trail etiquette always. Maintain safe speeds and control.

  • Guidelines for State Trail Etiquette

  • Pets welcome on leash – Dogs must be on a leash six feet or shorter. Please clean up after your pet.

  • Keep right, pass left – Always stay to the right side of the trail. Announce yourself (“On your left”) when passing others.

  • Stay off groomed ski trails – In winter, some trail segments may be groomed for cross-country skiing. Foot traffic and bikes are not allowed on groomed ski tracks.

  • Respect trail hours – Most state trails are open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

  • Leave no trace – Carry out all trash, and respect the natural environment.

  • No alcohol or glass containers – Alcohol is prohibited on state trails.

  • No fires – Campfires are not permitted along the trail, outside of designated DNR campfire rings.

  • Use designated parking – Park only at trailheads and approved lots. Parking within the Minnesota State Parks requires a Minnesota State Parks Vehicle Permit.

  • Respect private property – The trail passes through areas near homes and businesses. Please stay on the trail and do not trespass.
