The Gitchi-Gami State Trail offers a world-class riding experience along the rugged and scenic shoreline of Lake Superior.
From casual family outings to endurance rides, this paved, non-motorized trail welcomes every kind of rider — including those using wheelchairs and mobility devices.
You can easily combine an adventure on the Gitchi-Gami Trail with a hike on the Superior Hiking Trail, or spend a day exploring the Superior National Forest and nearby Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness for paddling, camping, and quiet reflection.
With rivers, inland lakes, and the great lake itself inviting boaters, anglers, and kayakers alike, outdoor adventure truly knows no bounds on Minnesota’s North Shore of Lake Superior.
Minnesota State Parks
Minnesota’s North Shore of Lake Superior offers eight state parks. The Gitchi-Gami State Trail contacts four of them!
Part of the GGST Trail experience is exploring Gooseberry Falls State Park, Split Rock Lighthouse State Park, Temperance River State Park, and soon – Tettegouche State Park.
They all have scenic rivers and waterfalls, hiking trails, camping, picnicking, Lake Superior shoreline and more.
Be sure to purchase a Minnesota State Park Vehicle Permit if you plan to drive into the parks.

WINTER
- The segment of trail in Gooseberry, from the mouth of the river to the visitor center, is groomed as a ski trail.
- The segment in Schroeder has snow removed/plowed for winter use for walkers/bikers.
Additionally, portions of the trail are groomed for fat tire biking/snowshoeing within Split Rock Lighthouse State Park when sufficient snow is present.
SPRING
- Waterfalls are rushing with spring snow melt.
- Snow is usually clear from the Trail by mid-May. Patchy/icy conditions may be present before or after. Use caution
